Business and Productivity Support for Small Producers

Producers in this association of Peruvian smallholder ginger and turmeric farmers face challenges like soil degradation, income constraints, and a lack of administrative resources. To help strengthen their productivity, profitability, and long-term ability to produce crops, these growers voted to allocate $6,800 USD in Community Development Funds towards a series of investments in their farming operations and community to support 30 direct beneficiaries. To enhance productivity and farm resilience, the association purchased and distributed organic fertilizers to improve soil health and boost yields. By replenishing essential nutrients, this effort supports better harvests and strengthens the soil for future crops. They also launched an agroforestry project, providing members with tree seedlings for deforested areas, which not only reduce soil erosion and improve biodiversity but also offer long-term income diversification as the trees mature. Recognizing the need for better administrative support, the association also invested in office infrastructure, including laptops, printers, and filing systems, improving record-keeping and member communication. Finally, they hired a dedicated accountant and administrative assistant to handle financial management and compliance. Together, these projects strengthen both land and business, improving productivity, household income, and family and community well-being for these small-scale producers.
