Project Description: Productivity and safety improvements for Indonesian coconut farmers
Reason for the Project: Coconut farmers in Indonesia's Central Java province, mostly small-scale and low-income, identified two top barriers to success. First, when processing coconut sugar, which is usually done at home, many farmers were making do with inefficient, substandard equipment. And second, they faced constant risk of injury when climbing coconut trees for harvesting due to a lack of safety gear.
Project Outcome: Farmers voted to invest their Fair Trade Community Development Funds to upgrade farmers' kitchens and coconut sugar processing equipment, and provide safety gear including helmets and harnesses for climbing coconut trees.
