Vision Health Campaign

Project Description: Workers voted to use Fair Trade Community Development Funds to hold a vision health campaign, bringing in specialists to offer eye exams and, when necessary, corrective lenses, all at no cost to workers.
Reason for the Project: A survey identified a lack of accessible and affordable vision care as a major issue for Calavo de Mexico's workers in the avocado-growing region of Michoacán in central Mexico.
Project Outcome: 1,356 workers received free eye exams, and over 1,200 were given free corrective lenses — a life-changing event for many workers who have suffered from poor vision for years but could not afford the cost of diagnosis and glasses.
