Project Description: Workers at this bell pepper farm voted to use their Fair Trade Community Development Funds to cover education costs for workers and their children, aiming to address a major barrier to education and economic opportunity for farm workers and their families.
Reason for the Project: While public school is free in Mexico, many children drop out of school and do not continue because their families cannot afford the required supplies, uniforms, and shoes.
Project Outcome: Over 300 students, both workers and their children, received pre-loaded debit cards in amounts ranging from $50 to $200 that can be used for books, uniforms, shoes, computers, and other educational expenses.
