Fishery sustainability

Project Description: Fishers voted to invest Fair Trade Community Development Funds in the health of their and local ecosystems through a range of activities.
Reason for the Project: Fishers in this Indonesian tuna fishing community identified a need to better understand and build awareness of issues threatening the sustainability of their fishery and take action.
Project Outcome: Fishers were trained to use logbooks to capture data that can improve the management of the tuna fishery and preserve endangered, threatened, and protected species. Fishers received new boxes to replace the Styrofoam boxes they previously used to store their catch on the boats. Lights were installed at landing sites to help fishers avoid damaging coral reefs, which play an important role in maintaining tuna fishery stocks.
