Safe drinking water

Project Description: Co-op members voted to use their Fair Trade Community Development Funds to install water treatment equipment in rural aqueducts throughout their local region.
Reason for the Project: A study conducted in 2018 revealed that 80% of farmers in this Colombian coffee co-op lacked access to safe drinking water, and as a result, they and their families suffered from high rates of water-borne illness.
Project Outcome: Over 7,000 community members now have safe drinking water, thanks to this project which launched in 2018 and continues to expand with the installation of more water purification facilities each year. Eventually, more than 28,000 people are expected to benefit from the project.
