Project Description: Workers voted to spend Fair Trade Community Development Funds to build houses for workers and their families.
Reason for the Project: A survey of workers at this Mexican agave farm showed that many would like to construct homes on the land that they already own, but cannot afford to do so and instead spend a significant portion of their household income on rent.
Project Outcome: Fair trade funds will support the construction of 1600-square-foot, 3-bedroom homes for 38 workers and their families. This will deliver a major quality-of-life improvement for families that are currently in cramped rental housing, while freeing up household income for food, education, and other needs.
