Productivity Improvements

Project Description: Farmers in the cooperative voted to use Fair Trade Community Development Funds to buy and distribute fertilizer for members, while partnering with a government agricultural agency to educate farmers on how to effectively use fertilizer on coffee plants.
Reason for the Project: The members of this cooperative of small coffee farmers could not afford fertilizer for their crops, resulting in lower productivity and quality and higher susceptibility to pests.
Project Outcome: All of the cooperative's 610 members received fertilizer and educational materials, which should result in higher productivity, quality, and ultimately household income for these small-scale family farmers.
