Community Center

Project Description: Wholesum workers voted to invest their Fair Trade Community Development Funds to create a community center where workers, students, and other community members could study, access the internet, and attend adult education classes.
Reason for the Project: The rural community of Los Janos in the Mexican state of Sonora, Wholesum's farm is located, lacked basic community facilities. Students had to travel to another town for internet and library access, which often meant an hour-long walk on a highway in a hot desert climate.
Project Outcome: Since the community center opened in 2017, over 500 workers, children, and other community members have access to a library, a computer center, and a safe place to do homework, In addition to internet access, tutoring and classes are available on a variety of subjects including literacy and computer skills.
