A Community Investment in Autism Care

Coffee producers at Cooperativa Mista Paraguaçu LTDA, COOMAP, in Minas Gerais, Brazil, directed $5,500 USD of Community Development Funds to a local autism support initiative. By investing in the Centro de Desenvolvimento Autista (CDA), these producers chose to address a critical need that extends far beyond their own farms and households. This decision highlights a powerful commitment to the wider community where they live and work. Operating in Paraguaçu since 2021, CDA currently serves 13 children in a rented space. The organization uses Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy to support communication, social, and cognitive development. However, estimates show that around 61 children in the municipality are on the autism spectrum. The current rented environment limits both the quality and scale of care, as this structured, evidence-based therapy requires a controlled and personalized setting to be most effective. To resolve this limitation, CDA launched a project to build a dedicated 320 square meter facility designed to serve up to 61 children, with a total projected cost of $122,000 USD. As part of their Premium use plan, COOMAP made a concrete decision to contribute to this vital effort. While their donation did not cover the entire construction, it provided direct financial backing to a project already underway and aligned producer funds with a clearly identified local priority. This initiative demonstrates how coffee producers act as crucial decision makers, directing Fair Trade Premium funds toward solidarity efforts that actively strengthen their broader community.
