Coffee Growers Build Savings for the Future

In the Macizo region of Cauca, Colombia, independent coffee farmers often face severe income uncertainty as they age. Because their earnings fluctuate with seasonal harvests and global coffee prices, making regular contributions to the traditional national pension system is incredibly difficult. Consequently, many rural producers reach their later years without formal economic protection. Determined to secure their financial futures, coffee farmers affiliated with the FNC (National Federation of Colombian Coffee Growers) across the municipalities of La Vega, Sotará, Rosas, La Sierra, Almaguer, and San Sebastián identified long-term stability as a critical priority. Through their Fair Trade Certified organizations, these farmers voted to invest $58,500 USD of Community Development Funds to join the Economic Benefits Colpensiones program. Known as BEPS, this voluntary government savings mechanism is specifically designed for individuals with variable incomes. Supported by targeted training and technical assistance, 2,593 coffee growers successfully enrolled in the program, utilizing the community funds to seed their individual savings accounts. The BEPS initiative empowers farmers to make flexible contributions whenever they have surplus income. The Colombian government then provides an incentive on the accumulated savings, which eventually converts into a reliable financial benefit during older age. Furthermore, the program delivers vital life insurance coverage, offering crucial support in cases of serious illness, accidental dismemberment, and death, while also providing essential funeral assistance. For coffee-growing families in Cauca, this strategic investment delivers immediate peace of mind and builds lasting economic security for the future.
