Strengthening Coffee Production and Processing at COCAMOL

Coffee producers at Cooperativa Cafetalera Mercedes Ocotepeque Limitada (COCAMOL) in Honduras actively leveraged their Fair Trade Premium to strengthen farm productivity and upgrade critical cooperative infrastructure. Through a democratic General Assembly, the members identified a shared need to support sustainable farming practices while simultaneously improving the local coffee processing facilities. These member-identified priorities guided two complementary projects designed to generate long-term economic and environmental benefits for the cooperative, individual families, and the broader community. For their first initiative, "Todos al Agua” (Everyone to the Water), the cooperative allocated $10,200 USD of Community Development Funds between August 2024 and September 2025 to directly support 111 coffee producers. The producers used these funds to purchase materials for organic compost production, establish coffee nurseries to replace aging trees, and distribute fruit and timber seedlings alongside seeds for family gardens. Furthermore, the project provided essential plant management tools and funded the construction of latrines for member households. By expanding access to organic fertilizers, new seedlings, and diversified crops, COCAMOL empowered its members to renew their farms and adopt production systems that protect soil health and promote environmental sustainability. In a complementary effort, COCAMOL invested an additional $15,000 USD to comprehensively upgrade the cooperative’s coffee roasting facility, benefiting approximately 300 people, including members and other local farmers who utilize the services. The cooperative remodeled the entire roasting area to meet strict hygiene and safety standards essential for processing ground coffee. The extensive facility improvements featured new flooring, ceiling and wall repairs, bathroom construction, the installation of dedicated work counters, and enhanced lighting throughout the workspace. These critical upgrades empower the cooperative to safely process and sell roasted coffee locally, providing members with the high-quality infrastructure they need to add lasting value to their harvest.
