Projeto Segunda Casa Supporting Early Learning in Bom Jesus

In Bom Jesus, Goiás, Brazil, many families lack access to academic support outside the classroom. This is especially true for those with lower incomes and young children in the early years of primary school. Teachers and parents have noted that some students could greatly benefit from extra help during these critical years of cognitive and emotional development. Workers at Goiasa Goiatube Alcool Ltda. , a Brazilian sugar producer, recognized this as a challenge that affects not just their colleagues but the entire community where their families live. In response, the Fair Trade Committee at Associação dos Trabalhadores da Goiasa proposed and approved "Projeto Segunda Casa" (Project Second Home) through a collective decision. The committee invested $55,700 USD from their Community Development Funds into an educational initiative providing consistent, early support for children from low-income households. The project was designed to serve elementary students who need additional reinforcement to keep pace with their grade level. The goal was to create a structured, caring space that complements public schooling while simultaneously addressing learning, emotional growth, and social skills. Projeto Segunda Casa currently supports 24 children in Bom Jesus. The program offers guided educational activities in a safe, welcoming environment where students can develop skills at their own pace. Learning is paired with attention to emotional wellbeing and social interaction, helping children feel more secure and engaged. “Tia Verinha,” the project’s head teacher, shares the story of two sisters, Mikaelly and Josi Kelly, who have participated for three years. Their family has limited resources and could not have afforded after-school tutoring. Through the program, both girls have strengthened their academic abilities and gained confidence. “At Segunda Casa, they feel welcomed, supported, and safe to learn at their own pace,” Tia Verinha explains. For them and other participants, Segunda Casa provides steady support during a critical stage of learning. By investing in early education, the workers have directed their Fair Trade funds toward an initiative that helps children build a foundation for continued school participation and long-term development.
