Mid-Autumn Festival Support for Workers

The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated each September, is one of China’s most important traditional holidays, centered on family reunion and shared meals. For the many apparel workers at Dongguan Leroy Far East Knitwears in Guangdong who live far from their hometowns, the holiday is a meaningful moment to uphold cultural traditions and feel connected to family and community. Recognizing this shared value, the workers chose to celebrate the festival together using their Fair Trade Community Development Funds. Through their Premium Management Team and a democratic consultation process, employees decided to allocate $26,200 USD to organize a special Mid-Autumn Festival gift distribution. The project successfully reached all 723 apparel workers at the factory. Each participant received a gift that thoughtfully combined cultural tradition with practical support. The distribution included traditional mooncakes, which are shared during the holiday as a symbol of reunion, harmony, and gratitude. Alongside the culturally significant mooncakes, the workers also received essential toiletries such as shampoo, toothpaste, and body wash. By including these everyday household necessities, the project helped reduce routine expenses for workers while ensuring the support was useful for everyone. This unique project design recognized both the daily needs of the workers and the important cultural traditions that bring them together as a community.
