Grape Workers in Peru Support Community Elder Care

Grape workers at Agrícola La Guerrero in Ica, Peru, recognized a critical need within their community and decided to take action. They invested $7,400 USD of Fair Trade Community Development Funds to support the San Juan de Dios Nursing Home, the only facility of its kind in the region. This vital institution provides daily care and a secure living environment for 50 elderly residents who depend heavily on its services. The initiative began when members of the Fair Trade Committee visited the nursing home to spend time with the residents and assess the facility firsthand. During their tour of the building, the workers identified several urgent infrastructure issues, including severe problems with the water and drainage systems alongside significant deficiencies in the electrical wiring. Moved by these pressing needs, the workers agreed to direct their premium funds toward comprehensive repairs that would restore the safety and functionality of the home. Approved in 2024 and completed in 2025, the project delivered crucial maintenance and upgrades throughout the facility. The targeted improvements to the water, drainage, and electrical systems now provide reliable access to essential utilities. By addressing these foundational infrastructure challenges, the workers helped secure much safer and more comfortable living conditions for the 50 residents who call the San Juan de Dios Nursing Home their home
