Food Security During Ramadan

Textile workers at Artistic Milliners Unit 2 in Sindh, Pakistan recently prioritized food security during Ramadan through their democratic project selection process and determined how their premium was invested. Through open discussions and voting, the workforce identified grocery support as the most practical way to manage the increased household expenses that often accompany the fasting month. To address this shared need, they chose to invest in comprehensive Ramadan hampers, providing families with essential staple foods required to prepare their daily sehri and iftar meals. Acting on this clear worker feedback, the Fair Trade Committee allocated $10,400 USD of Community Development Funds to launch the initiative in 2025. This targeted investment successfully reached 1,114 workers and their families. By supplying these essential groceries, the program helped offset rising food costs during a time when regular salaries were already stretched thin by daily living expenses. Beyond basic food security, the project carried a deeper cultural and emotional impact. The Fair Trade Committee designed this initiative to ensure that every worker could observe Ramadan with dignity and genuine peace of mind. Crucially, the money families saved on daily groceries allowed them to joyfully celebrate the upcoming Eid holidays. By empowering workers to make decisions that directly benefit their lives, this initiative supported their ability to participate fully in a deeply meaningful religious period while strengthening the entire community.
