Supporting Maternal Nutrition

At Youngone CEPZ Ltd. Factory in Bangladesh, garment workers identified maternal nutrition as a pressing welfare need. For many women in the garment sector, pregnancy often coincides with financial strain, rising food costs, and limited access to nutrient-rich options. These conditions increase the risk of anemia and other nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy: a critical period for both maternal health and fetal development. Workers noted that everyday diets often fall short of providing the iron, calcium, and vitamins needed to support a healthy pregnancy. In response, the factory’s Fair Trade Committee approved a focused nutrition support initiative for expecting mothers. In 2025, the committee allocated $2,175 USD of Community Development Funds to provide a practical, targeted supplement designed specifically for pregnant women. The project centered on distributing 350-gram packs of a fortified health drink formulated with iron, calcium, folic acid, and other essential nutrients. This decision reflected a shared priority: addressing preventable health risks during pregnancy through a simple intervention that workers could easily integrate into their daily routines at home. Through this initiative, 470 expecting mothers received supplements during 2025. Regular distribution helped ensure consistent access to key nutrients that are often missing from standard diets, supporting healthier pregnancies and reducing the risk of anemia and related complications. Alongside distribution, the project also served as an entry point for raising awareness about the importance of maternal nutrition, reinforcing practical knowledge about health during pregnancy. For participating workers, the supplement eased some of the financial pressure associated with meeting increased nutritional needs while contributing to better health outcomes during a vital stage of life.
