Essential Hygiene Support Kits

At Sumitra Woodcraft, a Fair Trade Certified furniture manufacturer in Uttar Pradesh, India, workers identified access to basic hygiene supplies as a shared priority. Through discussions led by the Fair Trade Committee, employees highlighted the ongoing cost of personal and household sanitary products, expressing strong interest in a program that supports their daily health needs. In direct response to this feedback, the Fair Trade Committee approved an allocation of $9,100 USD of Community Development Funds to provide sanitary health kits to 575 workers. As hygiene support has remained one of the most requested initiatives at the factory, worker representatives voted to continue the program to ensure consistent access to quality products that promote cleanliness at home. Each kit was thoughtfully assembled to meet a variety of needs and included hair shampoo, hair oil, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving supplies, bath soap, and laundry detergents. The kits were distributed directly to workers for use by themselves and their families. By reducing out-of-pocket spending on these essential items, the initiative helps workers and their families maintain consistent personal care routines and household sanitation. Workers shared that the supplies are practical and highly beneficial, demonstrating how worker-led decisions can effectively address everyday needs and promote community well-being.
