Investing in Education Through Computer Access in Peru

Workers at Sociedad Agrícola 3P, a grape farm and exporter in Lima, Peru, identified their children's education as a critical priority during a comprehensive needs assessment. The evaluation revealed that a significant portion of the workforce supports school-aged children, with 46 percent in primary education, 31 percent in secondary school, and 13 percent pursuing higher education. Families recognized that reliable access to digital tools has become increasingly essential for completing schoolwork and participating fully in modern learning activities. Furthermore, workers expressed a strong desire for equipment that could facilitate broader training and skill-building opportunities for their entire households. Exercising their collective voice through the General Assembly in August 2025, the workers approved a strategic project to invest in educational technology. They allocated $38,500 USD of Fair Trade Community Development Funds to purchase 150 computers along with all necessary accessories. The initiative also incorporated transparent documentation and reporting systems to ensure the Fair Trade premium was managed responsibly and effectively. The project reached completion in October 2025, successfully delivering equipment to 150 beneficiaries. With immediate access to computers and digital tools, the workers’ children now possess the vital resources required to support their studies across primary, secondary, and higher education. By intentionally directing their Community Development Funds toward technology, the workers prioritized a highly practical resource that actively fosters continuous learning, skill development, and long-term opportunity within their community.
