Housing Upgrades for Coffee Producers in Cauca

Coffee producers in the Valle del Patía region of Cauca, Colombia, have invested in practical housing upgrades to elevate living conditions for 433 coffee-growing families. Through the "Viviendas con Aroma de Café" ("Homes with Coffee Aroma") initiative, members of the Fair Trade Organization Valle del Patia recognized a crucial need to improve household sanitation, safety, and functionality. Instead of constructing new houses, the project targeted essential areas of existing homes, specifically bathrooms, floors, and kitchens. At completion, these upgrades will be carefully tailored to the unique conditions and priorities of households across the municipalities of Patía, Mercaderes, Florencia, Bolívar, and Balboa. Approved by the Comité Departamental de Cafeteros Cauca, Patía y Oriente, the initiative is backed by a $280,000 USD investment of their Community Development Funds. Throughout 2025, the project advanced through detailed planning, technical assessments, and custom design phases. These critical studies helped define specific improvements for each family. For example, homes with basic latrines will be equipped with modern ceramic toilets, while kitchens and floors will receive durable, hygienic finishes based on a framework that directly responds to local needs. Full implementation is scheduled for 2026, with construction taking place directly within the participating households. These targeted upgrades were designed to significantly improve hygiene, enhance material durability, and increase the daily usability of living spaces. By focusing on incremental yet deeply meaningful improvements, this initiative will strengthen the quality and safety of local homes, fostering long-term well-being and a better quality of life for rural coffee communities.
