Clear Vision for Footwear Workers

At Industria de Calzados Wirth, a historic Brazilian footwear manufacturer in Rio Grande do Sul known for its quality and tradition, daily production demands precise attention to detail. During routine quality evaluations, several workers reported experiencing visual difficulties that affected their precision and overall wellbeing. Recognizing the critical connection between clear vision, workplace safety, and quality of life, the workers decided to take action through their Fair Trade program. In November 2025, the General Assembly approved a targeted ophthalmology initiative, allocating approximately $4,200 USD in Fair Trade Community Development Funds. This project provides workers with essential specialized eye care services, including professional consultations, comprehensive vision assessments, and guidance on long-term eye health. When further care is needed, the initiative offers referrals for complementary medical exams or provides financial support of approximately $300 USD to help individuals cover the cost of prescription glasses. Designed to run through May 2026, the project is expected to benefit 221 workers. By the end of December, it had already made a significant impact, successfully reaching 126 participants. Through these initial consultations, 103 workers received prescription glasses to correct their vision, 14 underwent complementary diagnostic exams, and nine were referred for specialized surgical procedures. By addressing untreated vision problems, this initiative allows workers to carry out their intricate manufacturing tasks with renewed clarity and confidence. The investment not only enhances daily working conditions and safety on the production floor but also deeply improves the overall quality of life for the footwear artisans.
