Supporting Holiday Traditions at HuNan Province

At HuNan Province Yaurient, a cosmetic and skincare factory in China, workers identified practical household support as a top priority for their Fair Trade Premium. Because holiday periods often bring additional expenses for families, especially around major national celebrations, employees used the General Assembly to find a meaningful solution. They chose to invest their funds in seasonal gift distributions that align with widely observed festivals, providing essential food and household items to reduce daily costs and support family gatherings. Driven by this collective decision, workers allocated $8,760 USD of Community Development Funds between January 1 and June 1, 2025. This investment provided gifts for the Spring Festival, Women's Day, and the Dragon Boat Festival to 191 beneficiaries. Each worker received a Spring Festival package filled with dried longans, red dates, sweet potato chips, sunflower seeds, peanuts, and watermelon seeds, alongside a 10 kilogram bucket of cooking oil and 5 kilograms of rice. For the Dragon Boat Festival, the distribution included 12 preserved eggs and 8 zongzi per person, while each recipient received a practical umbrella for daily use on Women's Day. Later in the year, from October 1 to December 1, 2025, the workers allocated an additional $4,630 USD to expand the program. This phase distributed Mid-Autumn Festival packages and Christmas gifts to 240 beneficiaries. The Mid-Autumn package featured a box of traditional moon cakes and 5 kilograms of rice per person, while the Christmas gift included a small bag of fresh fruit to mark the end of the year. These celebrations hold deep cultural meaning for the workers and their families. The Mid-Autumn Festival, observed for more than two millennia, centers on reunion and shared meals under the full moon as a powerful symbol of family unity. Similarly, the Spring Festival and Dragon Boat Festival are vital moments for households to come together to prepare and exchange traditional foods. By directing their Community Development Funds toward these cherished occasions, workers ensured they could fully participate in traditions that strengthen family ties and social connections. Ultimately, this worker-led investment went far beyond meeting material needs, empowering employees to maintain a standard of living that reflects dignity, cultural continuity, and the joyful celebration of important milestones.
