Aracelly's story of learning and gaining confidence

In Boca de Arena, Costa Rica, Aracelly has spent six years working at Agroindustrial Piñas del Bosque SA Finca Ecopiñas y Muelle, a pineapple producer where she is currently the only woman on the planting team. As a child, she completed just a few years of primary school. Limited access to schools and difficult economic conditions in the region meant that many students of her generation were unable to finish their education. Despite this, Aracelly held onto the hope of one day completing her primary studies and continuing to learn. In 2019, that opportunity became a reality when workers at Finca El Muelle elected to invest Fair Trade Community Development Funds towards establishing the Integral Center. Through the Fair Trade Committee process, workers identified education and skills training as top priorities and directed funds to create a shared space to address those needs. Since opening, 176 workers have participated in classes at the center. Aracelly enrolled in several courses, including basic Excel and computer skills, first aid training, and financial well-being workshops. For her, learning to use a computer was a significant milestone; having never used one before, she now navigates basic programs with confidence. The impact of the financial well-being training extended beyond the workplace. Aracelly and her family applied the budgeting and saving techniques they learned at home, contributing to greater household stability. The Integral Center is open not only to workers but also to their families and neighbors. Since its launch, 143 family members and 122 community members have utilized its services or participated in training. This shared access has expanded the practical value of the investment. Aracelly describes the shift in her own words: “Now I feel more prepared in the financial wellness program. In fact, my husband and children feel the same way, and if someone says ‘it can't be done,’ I say, ‘yes, it can.’” Through worker-led decisions and a focus on education, the center continues to build skills that families can put into action in their everyday lives.
