Building Stronger Fair Trade Committees

For coconut farmers affiliated with Peter Paul Phillipines Corporation in Candelaria and Sorsogon, the Fair Trade model provides much more than a certification; it creates a vital platform for growth. Before joining the program, many of these farmers lacked access to essential training on pest control, farm management, and inter-cropping. Today, they actively strengthen their skills through structured peer exchange. A highlight of this effort is the annual inter-cluster meeting, a highly anticipated event where Fair Trade Committees gather to build capabilities, review responsibilities, and learn directly from one another. During the recent gathering in Sorsogon, committee members used this opportunity to deepen how they apply Fair Trade in practice. Guided by locally based field advisors from the Producer Services department at Fair Trade USA, the farmers held practical sessions to strengthen internal inspection processes, communication, and leadership. The most valuable lessons, however, came from the farmers themselves. By sharing how they successfully implemented projects using Community Development Funds, members translated complex requirements into actionable steps. Reflecting on this dynamic environment, Leona Adante, a Producer Services field advisor, shared, "It was amazing to witness empowerment firsthand as they take the microphone to ask questions and share their opinion and experiences when they were revising the draft of some of their election procedures." Beyond formal training, the meeting built powerful bridges across regions. Even though Sorsogon is far from Candelaria and features its own local language, farmers easily forged strong relationships through group activities and informal discussions. For the Sorsogon Fair Trade Committee, these cross-regional connections serve a highly practical purpose. Members carry this shared knowledge back home, equipping their fellow farmers with new skills and vital information. This vibrant peer exchange guarantees that project implementation remains consistent, widely understood, and deeply rooted across the entire cooperative.
