Strengthening Household Food Systems

Coffee producers at the APASOL small farmer association in Cajamarca, Peru, recently identified food security as a critical concern for their households, especially during the lean months following the coffee harvest. Through their established democratic decision-making process, the producers prioritized practical solutions to help their families maintain reliable access to nutritious food. Recognizing the need for both immediate relief and long-term resilience, Apasol members voted to invest $7,300 USD of Fair Trade Community Development Funds. This strategic allocation supports 156 coffee producers and cooperative workers through a comprehensive project designed to strengthen household food systems during periods of reduced income. The initiative thoughtfully combines immediate food assistance with sustainable, member-selected agricultural activities. To address short-term needs, the cooperative purchased and distributed comprehensive family food baskets filled with essential staples that included rice, sugar, oil, canned fish, milk, noodles, and lentils. Seamlessly transitioning from immediate relief to long-term sustainability, the project also equips families with seeds for organic gardens and supplies for small animal husbandry, including poultry, pigs, guinea pigs, or rabbits, alongside beekeeping equipment. To ensure these new ventures thrive, participants receive dedicated technical assistance that guides them in establishing their gardens and managing their livestock and bees effectively over time. Apasol has been implementing this project in strategic stages. While the essential food baskets have already reached all 156 participating families, the organic gardens, animal husbandry, and beekeeping activities are currently being rolled out to the first 25% of the beneficiaries. Ultimately, these integrated efforts aim to create a much more varied household diet while providing valuable secondary sources of food and income. By securing access to nutritious food during the challenging post-harvest months, the initiative allows families to confidently direct their limited cash resources toward other critical needs like healthcare, education, and housing. Through their collective decision to invest in both immediate supplies and long-term food production, Apasol members are powerfully strengthening the stability of their community between harvest cycles.
