Protection Beyond the Sea

Tuna fisher members supplying D&L Seafoods in the Philippines identified health and accident protection as a key priority through their needs assessment. Fishing involves long stretches at sea, physical risk, and exposure to conditions that can threaten both livelihoods and household finances. In response, members chose to invest approximately $1,970 USD from Community Development Funds in an annual insurance program covering 110 fishers. The program provides comprehensive year-round protection, including accident coverage and fire insurance for members' homes and belongings. Designed to offer financial support when unexpected incidents occur, the policy helps fisher members manage costs that could otherwise place serious strain on their families. The insurance is renewed each year, reflecting members' ongoing commitment to maintaining this benefit as part of their collective Fair Trade investments. By organizing through the Fair Trade Certified program, fishers are able to pool resources and access protections that would be difficult to obtain individually. With coverage in place throughout the year, members have an added layer of financial security alongside their fishing work. When covered incidents occur, members can access compensation that helps them respond to emergencies and reduce the economic impact of unforeseen events on their households.
