A Plan for Coffee Livelihoods

Coffee producers from the Asociación de Productores de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Tayronaca in Colombia recently determined how to invest their 2025 Fair Trade Community Development Funds. Driven by inclusive member assemblies, they allocated approximately $470,000 USD into a highly coordinated project portfolio. This plan focuses directly on institutional strengthening, productive investment, environmental stewardship, and social well-being to address the real needs of their organization. To enhance their farming operations, the producers financed major infrastructure upgrades and technical support. Their investment funded 35 coffee wastewater management systems, improvements to five wet mills, and four parabolic dryers. It also covered technical support and internal auditing staff, continued georeferencing work, agroforestry planting and maintenance, and crucial fuel purchases to maintain the tertiary roads that connect producer communities Beyond immediate agricultural needs, a significant portion of the funds went toward securing long-term community assets. Tayronaca purchased land at the headwaters of a local water source in Los Corazones. This proactive step protects a critical natural resource that both coffee-producing families and the surrounding community depend on daily. Additionally, the organization invested in 17 rural schools across Chimila. These funds supported upgraded sanitation facilities, classroom repairs, and painting projects. This educational investment serves a broader goal of supporting youth development and encouraging the next generation to continue family farming. Together, these strategic choices illustrate how coffee producers utilize Fair Trade Premium to guarantee the long-term sustainability of their region. By combining environmental protection, stronger production infrastructure, and dedicated support for rural education, this plan builds a strong foundation for younger generations to remain actively involved in agriculture and community life.
