Transforming Workers homes in Queretaro

Tomato workers at Agroindustrias GEMSO in Querétaro, Mexico, took a major step to improve their living conditions through a powerful, worker-led initiative. During a comprehensive needs assessment guided by their local Fair Trade Committee, employees identified significant gaps in basic household infrastructure. Many families reported a lack of reliable water storage, consistent access to hot water, and adequate sanitation facilities. For low-income households, managing daily hygiene and water access with limited resources caused constant strain on their everyday routines. To solve these pressing challenges, the workers chose to invest $26,200 USD of Fair Trade Community Development Funds to launch the “Transformando Hogares” (Transforming Home) project. Through their independent decision-making process, workers were able directly targeted their most critical needs. The Fair Trade Committee coordinated the selection and procurement of materials to maximize the project's impact. In total, 165 workers, representing 70 percent of the entire workforce, received vital infrastructure support. Depending on their specific household requirements, families received solar water heaters, durable water tanks, modern bathroom fixtures, or reliable water pumps. The committee organized the distribution to guarantee that each participating household secured the exact equipment they needed to upgrade their living space. Today, these crucial upgrades are fully operational. Participating families now enjoy consistent access to hot water, highly improved water storage capacity, and much safer sanitation facilities. By directly addressing these fundamental needs, this worker-driven investment has profoundly improved daily routines, elevated personal hygiene, and boosted overall household wellbeing.
