Education Support for 92 families

At the start of each school year in Veracruz, Mexico, the cost of school supplies places pressure on household budgets for many families and often brings significant financial stress. For many agricultural families, the rising cost of mandatory public school supply lists places a heavy burden on limited household budgets. Recognizing this shared challenge through a needs assessment, citrus workers at San José Frutas Tropicales SA de CV identified this expense as one of the most significant financial demands, noting that public school supply lists have become increasingly costly and reduce available household income. In response, workers chose to invest $2,900 USD of their Fair Trade Community Development Funds to create and distribute essential school supply packages. The worker-led Fair Trade Committee managed the project, working carefully to align the provided materials with official school requirements so students had exactly what they needed for their classes. Designed to support the children of all 92 participating workers, the initiative focused on timely procurement and organized delivery just before the new term began. By delivering these packages directly to families, the project helped children start the academic year fully equipped while significantly reducing out-of-pocket expenses for parents. This practical, self-directed investment not only supports regular school attendance and daily learning but also provides crucial relief that strengthens long-term family financial stability.
