Stronger Futures for Youth

At a Fair Trade Certified strawberry farm operated by Driscoll’s Inc. in Baja California, Mexico, workers identified youth education and family support as priorities for Community Development Funds spending. In the San Quintín Valley, families highlighted the need for safe spaces that help children and adolescents stay engaged in school and build strong relationships at home. Driven by this priority, workers allocated approximately $11,200 USD of Fair Trade Community Development Funds to sustain essential youth education and family support programs for a third consecutive year. Through their Fair Trade Committee, they partnered with local organizations to deliver a comprehensive approach to family wellness. This initiative featured socioemotional workshops for children and adolescents, paired closely with positive parenting training for caregivers. In total, the initiative reached 4,167 children and adolescents across 16 schools. To further enrich student learning, the program introduced hands-on science workshops designed to build critical thinking and ignite a passion for technology. This effort culminated in students proudly presenting their work at a regional science fair hosted by the Autonomous University of Baja California, an exciting event that drew 3,600 students from 16 schools. Ultimately, this worker-directed investment provides structured, supportive environments that keep students actively connected to their education. Simultaneously, it equips families with practical tools to nurture open communication and foster strong, healthy relationships at home.
