Safe Water for the Community

Access to safe drinking water became a top priority for shrimp workers at Avanti Frozen Foods in Andhra Pradesh, India, during a recent needs assessment. Using $4,700 USD from their Community Development Funds, the workers funded a vital project to improve health and sanitation for 700 local people. This group includes children, women, and other community residents. By building a new water purification plant in the local area, workers successfully expanded their impact far beyond the workplace and supported access to essential resources for local families. The Fair Trade Committee guided the implementation of the project and coordinated activities to support the long-term operation and sustainability of the water purification system. This important initiative successfully built a water purification plant to provide clean, safe drinking water. In addition, the committee hosted awareness sessions focused on daily hygiene practices and preventing waterborne diseases. Workers and community members participated in these activities to strengthen understanding of safe water handling and everyday sanitation practices. Water quality tests and health surveys were used to monitor the project’s impact and track reductions in water-related illnesses over time. Through this strategic Fair Trade investment, workers created a meaningful project that directly benefits participating employees and the entire surrounding community by improving public health and delivering safe drinking water to hundreds of local residents.
