Workers Prioritize Food Security in Indonesia

At PT Andalan Mandiri Busana, a recently Fair Trade Certified apparel factory in Indonesia, workers utilized one of their first cycles of Community Development Funds to address a critical local issue: food security. Located in an area with high living costs, the majority of employees rely solely on factory wages to support their households. Consequently, the rising cost of staple foods represents a significant financial burden, making food security a practical and widely shared priority. A needs assessment conducted by the Fair Trade Committee underscored the urgency of this challenge. The findings revealed that more than 76% of employees support dependents, and over 82% allocate at least half of their income to basic food items. Based on this data, the workforce collectively agreed to implement a food package distribution project for all employees, with the delegation team overseeing coordination to ensure consistent access. With a total allocation of $14,900 USD, the initiative successfully reached 1,737 employees. Each worker received a package containing rice, sugar, cooking oil, and instant noodles, staples selected specifically because they are consumed daily and directly offset regular grocery costs. For the workforce, these packages offered immediate financial relief. By reducing the amount spent on essential nutrition, the program allowed families to redirect savings toward other household priorities. This investment serves as a powerful example of how the workers at Andalan identified a shared vulnerability and directed funds toward a solution with direct, measurable impact on their daily lives.
