Housing and Home Essentials for Mango Workers

Oaxaca, Mexico, mango workers at Agrytropical Supply SA de CV identified housing conditions as a critical priority affecting their families. Through collaborative discussions, the workforce took action. Driven by worker-led decision-making, they invested $41,400 USD of Fair Trade Community Development Funds in a comprehensive housing project benefiting 88 workers and then this benefit extends to all of their families as well. Because the workforce faced diverse living situations, the Fair Trade Committee divided the investment into two balanced components: access to safe housing structures and essential household equipment. The first component provided essential construction materials for workers who did not yet own a home or were actively building one. The second component supported workers who already had secure housing by helping them acquire vital everyday appliances, including refrigerators, stoves, and washing machines. The committee managed procurement, while participating workers contributed their own physical labor to complete the building projects. As materials and appliances reached the families, workers immediately began making practical upgrades. The improved structures provide much-needed privacy and security, while modern appliances make food storage, meal preparation, and household management easier. Gerardo Cruz, a project participant, described his experience with this initiative: "How could I not be excited? Thanks to Fair Trade Premium, I now have a plan for the future. First, I was able to lay a solid floor, then build the walls and construct some rooms. Now my family has more privacy and security, especially since I have to go out to work for several months and they’re left on their own. I hope that this year I can buy the materials to build the roof." By addressing immediate needs through a tailored approach, these workers are making steady improvements that will strengthen their households for years to come.
