Flexible Support for Everyday Needs

During a recent needs assessment conducted for tomato and bell pepper workers at Comercializadora Agreste in Guanajuato, Mexico, the workforce of 5,891 people highlighted a wide range of essential needs, from food and medicine to school supplies and home improvements. These diverse priorities underscored a clear need for flexible support that could adapt to unique family situations. Taking charge of their community needs, the worker-led Fair Trade Committee decided to invest $323,000 USD of Community Development Funds into a comprehensive voucher program. The committee carefully selected a versatile system accepted across multiple locations and states in Mexico. This strategic choice empowered all 5,891 workers to decide exactly how to allocate the support based on their own household priorities. The program distributed vouchers to every participant, guaranteeing broad access to essential goods that included groceries, medicine, shoes, clothing, construction materials, and school supplies. Today, workers use the vouchers in ways that directly reflect their individual lives. Estefana Caudillo, a greenhouse worker of 21 years, shared, "I am glad this project has benefited all my coworkers." Maricela Miranda, who has spent five years in the greenhouse, explained that she primarily uses her vouchers to buy food. Meanwhile, Lisbeth Gaytán, who works in packaging, uses the funds to purchase medicine for her parents. She noted, "I feel very proud to receive this support," highlighting how this worker-led initiative successfully provides flexible, meaningful relief to thousands of families.
