School Supplies for Families

At Calavo de Mexico's avocado operations in Michoacán, workers identified school supplies as a priority for the 2025 to 2026 school year. A recent survey showed that 56% of workers' children attended classes from preschool through secondary school. Many families supported multiple students at the same time. Buying required school materials created a large household expense, raising concerns about keeping children in school. Using their Community Development Funds, the workers voted to invest $55,700 USD in a targeted school supplies campaign designed to support all participating staff with children in school, along with workers continuing their own education. The Fair Trade Committee asked workers about each student's academic level for the upcoming year. Then, they organized educational kits based on official lists from Mexico's Ministry of Public Education. The team prepared different packages for preschool, primary, secondary, high school, and university students. This detailed planning resulted in items perfectly matched the needs and requirements of each classroom. In total, the committee distributed 1,485 supply kits before the academic year began. Each package contained the exact materials students needed to start their classes fully prepared. By covering the heavy cost of essential supplies, this project offered practical financial relief to participating families. It helped students confidently continue their education with fewer money barriers at the start of the new academic year.
