Lemon producer SICAR SA de CV in Colima, Mexico, has proudly been Fair Trade Certified for eight years. During a needs assessment, workers identified household equipment as a major priority for their families. Some employees lacked basic furniture, while others still relied on firewood for cooking. Because Colima experiences extremely high temperatures, workers highlighted the urgent need for reliable appliances to safely store perishable food and prepare daily meals. The workers initially approved a dedicated household appliance project in 2021. Since then, they have consistently allocated Community Development Funds to support this vital initiative every year. Comunidad Justa AC, the legal entity led by the Fair Trade Committee, expertly manages and implements these projects. Using $350,830 USD from the premium funds, the committee provided 837 workers with one essential appliance or piece of furniture tailored to their specific needs. The execution process included detailed needs assessments, product quotations, organized purchasing, and direct distribution. The committee also collected follow-up documentation to guarantee that each participant received their chosen item. This careful oversight secured complete transparency in managing and delivering the Fair Trade premium. Such clear accountability remains a crucial standard requirement and builds strong trust among the workforce. Ultimately, families received practical items that directly addressed the specific needs within their homes. The project helped workers equip their living spaces for daily use, creating much more comfortable household routines. By providing these essential goods, the initiative significantly reduced financial burdens that many families would otherwise struggle to manage alone.
