Safer Work for Cocoa Farmers

Cocoa farmers at COOP SCOSA-CI in the Bas-Sassandra region of Côte d’Ivoire identified a need to strengthen farm oversight and improve working conditions. Recognizing the importance of safe workplaces and consistent agricultural standards, members agreed to invest $4,500 USD of Community Development Funds in their Internal Management System team. This group is responsible for monitoring, implementing, and reinforcing quality and safety standards across all member farms. Targeted training covered occupational health, workers’ rights, and quality of life, equipping the team with tools to foster a safer, healthier work environment. Strengthening the Internal Management System not only benefits daily operations but also supports the cooperative’s ability to maintain Fair Trade certification by ensuring compliance with required standards. As part of this project, members established a community service group dedicated to working directly with producers in the field. This group promotes good agricultural practices, delivers ongoing guidance, and helps ensure the consistent application of standards. As a result, 150 farmers have already benefited from improved oversight, clearer information, and stronger support systems. The initiative has significantly enhanced coordination and information flow within the cooperative. Today, the community service group remains active, helping members maintain best practices and promoting safe, sustainable farming. These efforts have resulted in more reliable production, better working conditions, and a stronger, more resilient cooperative.
