Stronger Farms Through Livestock

For coconut farmers that supply product for Franklin Baker in the Philippines, managing daily farm expenses is a constant challenge. During Fair Trade Committee discussions, members identified transporting coconuts as a major cost where practical support could make a significant difference. They recognized a clear need for better control over operations and new opportunities for additional income. Taking action, the committees agreed to invest Community Development Funds into a targeted livestock dispersal project. In 2025, they allocated $9,700 USD to support 14 member beneficiaries. Following committee guidelines, selected farmers received either horses or carabaos (domesticated buffalo) based on their specific farm conditions. Horses were provided for remote, hilly areas, while carabaos were chosen for areas with flatter terrain. This strategic decision directly supports farm efficiency while opening doors for extra earnings. Today, members use these animals to manage coconut handling within their farms, reducing the need to pay for rented hauling services. This immediate savings helps households effectively manage their daily operational costs. Furthermore, owning livestock provides a reliable source of revenue, as farmers can utilize the animals for additional agricultural work. The project supports more consistent farm operations while contributing to financial stability for participating families.
