Health Camps for Shrimp Workers

At Avanti Frozen Foods in Andhra Pradesh, India, shrimp workers made regular healthcare a top priority during a recent needs assessment. Using $10,400 USD from their Community Development Funds, they launched a targeted health project designed to directly benefit 200 workers. This vital initiative organized regular medical camps at the workplace, offering basic medical consultations, health awareness sessions, and free essential medicines. Both local and migrant workers participated in the project, which actively addressed concerns about limited access to timely medical care. The local Fair Trade Committee partnered with healthcare professionals to host these camps right on site. This approach made essential services much more accessible for workers who typically struggle with long travel distances and demanding work schedules. Workers highlighted a strong need for regular checkups, preventive care, and the early detection of underlying health issues. Guided by this direct feedback, the committee chose a project that delivered practical medical support while teaching valuable lessons about hygiene, nutrition, and healthy habits. Overall, the medical camps provided free health screenings, professional consultations, necessary treatments, medicines, and vaccines. Early detection of common health conditions allowed workers to receive timely referrals and follow-up care when needed. This initiative also improved general knowledge of preventive health and generated valuable data to guide future wellness programs.
