Workers Invest in Household Food Supplies

Workers at Valles del Norte, an avocado farm in Coquimbo, Chile, identified rising food costs as a major concern for their households. Through a needs assessment survey, workers shared that a higher cost of living placed heavy pressure on everyday expenses, especially groceries. In response, the farm's workers prioritized direct support to help cover these essential costs for their families. During their general assembly of workers, participants voted to allocate $1,000 USD toward food supplies for all workers in the program. The assembly selected specific food items based on the results of their needs assessment survey. After making the purchases, the committee distributed the supplies to participating workers. The staff explained that while annual bonuses help cover some household bills, daily food costs require additional support throughout the entire year. This project benefited 24 participating workers and their families, reaching an estimated 72 people in total. By offsetting part of their regular food expenses, the initiative provided practical relief as families navigated higher living costs. A follow-up survey will measure exactly how this subsidy contributed to household finances and assess the overall impact of the program on everyday expenses.
