Supporting Local Communities Through Fair Trade Funds

At Hoja Verde, a flower farm in Cayambe, Ecuador, the Fair Trade Committee deeply values its role in addressing collective community needs. Through FLORSABI, the legal entity representing the workforce, the committee established a powerful tradition. Each year, they allocate a portion of their Fair Trade Premium funds to uplift local organizations that serve vulnerable populations. In 2025, the worker-led committee carefully identified priority areas and selected partner organizations. They proudly invested $15,000 USD of Community Development Funds to support 20 community groups and social initiatives, directly reaching approximately 600 people. Key partners included Comuna San Luis de Guachalá, which focuses on community development and supports older adults; Casa Hogar Santiago, offering a safe haven for at-risk children separated from their families; and Fundación REDNI, dedicated to reducing chronic child malnutrition in children under two years old. These group selections highlight a strong commitment to structured, locally led efforts that deliver clear community impact. Committee members also take an active role in delivering this support, which deepens their connection with the neighbors they serve. As one committee member shared, "It is a beautiful experience. We go ourselves to deliver the support. Being in direct contact with people is very meaningful, and their gratitude is something that truly stays with us." This investment supports the continuity and growth of essential services, including care programs, nutrition support, and community activities. By partnering with established local groups, the committee provides structure that funds reach those in need through reliable systems. Ultimately, this collaborative approach allows the benefits of Fair Trade to flow far beyond the farm, powerfully supporting essential needs across the surrounding region.
