Grocery Support for Fishing Families

Members of the Indonesian Pole and Line and Handline Fishery Association (AP2HI) in Bitung, North Sulawesi, recently used part of their 2025 Fair Trade Community Development Funds to provide essential grocery allowances. This vital initiative supported local fishing families during periods of low fishing activity and major religious holidays. AP2HI was established to represent Indonesia's tuna sector and to strengthen sustainable fisheries and coastal livelihoods. Alongside promoting responsible fishing practices, the association heavily prioritizes projects that support the well-being and resilience of local families. These households often face fluctuating incomes depending on seasonal conditions and daily fishing activity. During a general assembly meeting, members identified food assistance as an urgent community need. This was especially important for independent fishers who frequently experience reduced income during slower seasons. Guided by a thorough needs assessment survey, the project allocated $795 USD from their premium funds for targeted grocery support. The program successfully distributed 37 food packages, valued at approximately $36 USD each, directly reaching 37 members and their families. Looking ahead, AP2HI plans to expand the next phase to support 56 members. Reflecting on this meaningful progress, one association member explained that before joining the Fair Trade group, local fishers simply did not receive this level of community support or structured benefits. Today, these targeted investments help guarantee food security while building a much stronger and more resilient fishing community.
