Organizing Disaster Relief Through Fair Trade Funds

Coffee farmers in Aceh, Indonesia, experienced severe disruptions when Cyclone Senyar brought devastating floods and landslides to their region in November 2025. As members of the Koperasi Produsen Putra Tani Berkarya cooperative, these farmers saw their local roads and water systems heavily damaged. Because external emergency support was limited, the cooperative relied on its Fair Trade democratic systems and Community Development Funds to organize rapid assistance for the villages of Pulo Intan Santa, Simpang Antara, and Rime Raya. To drive the recovery, the cooperative allocated $27,900 USD for targeted agricultural support and immediate disaster relief. They distributed coffee seedlings across the farming villages, providing each farmer with 40 seedlings to restart planting on their remaining land. The funds also covered December 2025 operational costs and salaries, ensuring the cooperative could continue functioning throughout the crisis. Guided by the specific needs of each community, the cooperative delivered tailored relief. Pulo Intan Santa Village received essential rice supplies after damaged roads halted normal food deliveries. Simpang Antara Village utilized temporary cable crossing equipment to restore vital transportation links. Meanwhile, Rime Raya Village secured new pipes to repair clean water channels destroyed by the landslides. Through these fast and decisive actions, cooperative members quickly regained access to food, clean water, and transportation. Farmers successfully resumed their daily agricultural activities and began planting new coffee seedlings. These critical investments supported members through a challenging recovery while restoring morale across the region. Ultimately, the Fair Trade Premium proved to be a powerful tool for emergency response, empowering the cooperative to organize immediate, community led support exactly when it was needed most.
