Workers Invest in Community Wellbeing

Workers at Kauai Coffee Company in Hawaiʻi invested $132,660 USD of Community Development Funds in 2025 to support workers, families, and community initiatives across Kauaʻi. Guided by the Kauai Coffee Fair Trade Committee and informed by the worker’s needs assessment, Premium Participants voted to continue a seven-year distribution model that allocates 50% of Premium Funds directly to workers and 50% to community programs. The project reached 151 registered beneficiaries, including 140 workers and their families. Kauaʻi’s small size and high cost of living influenced the committee’s decision to partner with established local programs that already have the infrastructure and expertise to address community priorities efficiently. Workers identified pressing needs, including education, housing, food security, health services, and transportation. As a result, the 2025 funding backed six targeted community initiatives and awarded five $1,000 USD educational scholarships. The remaining half of the Fair Trade Premium funds were directed to workers and their households. By combining direct worker support with investments in community-led programs, the project strengthened resources that benefit both workers and the broader Kauaʻi community.
