Fair Trade Funds for Everyday Needs

Workers at Comercializadora Agreste Norte, a pepper farm in Guanajuato, Mexico, frequently navigate income variability and rising economic pressures. To support their community, they utilized $36,300 USD of Fair Trade Community Development Funds. Following a needs assessment, workers identified food, healthcare, and school supplies as their primary household priorities. With approval from the General Assembly, the Fair Trade Committee launched a targeted voucher distribution project to benefit 2,741 workers. Because workers emphasized the need for a highly transparent distribution process, the committee established a secure voucher system aligned directly with participant priorities. Strict tracking measures, supplier documentation, and redemption monitoring guaranteed that all funds were used appropriately and fully complied with Fair Trade standards. The project successfully delivered essential relief to families. Workers used their vouchers to purchase groceries, medical items, and educational materials. This initiative directly supported workers while helping their households cover vital daily expenses. Cruz Flores shared, "I benefited from the Premium project, I purchased food and the part of my salary that I didn’t use to buy food I keep it as savings." Ana Karen Santana explained, "I used the money to buy my kids school supplies and it was very useful." Veronica Torres also noted, "I benefited from the voucher distribution and I would like that we could package more Fair Trade product, so we could have more benefits."
These collective experiences highlight how the voucher project not only met immediate household needs, but also strengthened economic security and optimism for the future among workers and their families.
