Learning Through Certification

Melon production at Melon Export S.A. in Choluteca, Honduras, involves demanding fieldwork carried out by a large workforce whose daily routines start early and extend into the afternoon. In this environment, implementing the Fair Trade Certified program actively changes how the company and its workers approach working conditions, incentives, and long term improvements. Joel Almendárez has worked at the company for four years and helps guide and implement the Fair Trade program. For him, the initial certification process provided a vital learning experience shaped by seeing the standard put into practice. After the first year audit, Joel and his team clearly understood how Fair Trade Certified requirements create better daily operations. "The audit was very supportive for us because it is a learning space. Personally, I believe it was an audit of great learning. We had the theory, but the practical, on-site component was truly valuable because it helped us interpret the Standard more deeply," he explains. This hands-on approach strengthened internal systems. It also showed exactly how the program supports workers through structured benefits and improved workplace practices. Joel notes that the true value of the program shines in how it reaches workers and their families. "I would like to remain in this program for many years because I see that it has a strong impact on the most vulnerable group within companies, which are the workers. Agricultural work is extremely demanding. These are people who leave their homes very early and return late in the day, with families involved and children at home. Through this program, they can generate impactful projects for themselves, their families, and their communities." His perspective reflects how the certification process functions not only as a compliance requirement, but as an ongoing tool for learning and improvement that supports more equitable conditions in agricultural workplaces.
