Saritas Story of Leadership and Change

At The United Nilgiri Tea Estates in India, Fair Trade investments actively shape daily life for workers and their communities. Sarita Kumari, a tea worker originally from Jharkhand in eastern India, has been at the estate for seven years, shared how these investments create practical, lasting change for her family. Workers receive essential support for household items like water filters, improved roofing, cupboards, and cookers. Simultaneously, their children benefit from school fee assistance, books, and daily meals. Reflecting on these opportunities, Sarita explained, "If we hadn’t come here, we wouldn’t be able to educate our children properly… [back home] in the village no one studies, there are no facilities." One of the most powerful examples of social change at the estate is the leadership role women take through the Sexual Harassment Committee. Sarita serves on this committee, where women address harassment cases and connect workers with nurses, doctors, or police support when needed. The committee builds a safer workplace while strengthening women's participation in community decision-making. Women workers are not only participating in workplace protections; they are leading them and shaping systems of support that directly uplift their communities. Their leadership shows how worker-led structures build trust, accountability, and safety across the entire estate. Additionally, Sarita views education as one of the most important outcomes of Fair Trade. Support for children's schooling helps families plan for the future and significantly reduces financial pressure at home. She noted, "Fair Trade is supporting our children’s education. Our children should study well… should have a future. Through them, our future will move forward." Her experience proves how worker-managed investments drive practical improvements in education, health, safety, and household well-being. By utilizing these funds, workers step into active roles to directly address and fulfill the pressing needs of their own communities.
