At the United Nilgiri Tea Estates in Tamil Nadu, southern India, access to technology has long been a priority for students and teachers at the local school. Serving children from kindergarten through higher secondary levels, many from tea estate worker families, the school community identified technology education as a practical area for investment to keep pace with a changing world. When computers were first introduced in 1998, their number and use were limited. As digital skills grew more essential for both education and employment, the need for an upgrade became clear. Through the Fair Trade program, the Fair Trade Committee allocated Community Development Funds to strengthen computer education. The investment focused on ensuring students of all ages could learn in appropriate settings. Today, the school operates two computer labs equipped with a total of 40 Dell™ desktop computers. The funds support not only the purchase of equipment but also regular maintenance and annual software updates, allowing students and teachers to work with current systems. Students receive instruction in basic computer skills and programming, which helps prepare them for higher education pathways that increasingly demand digital literacy. Shanmugan, the school’s computer teacher for over a decade, has seen the impact of this sustained investment. “We are going to the next level through computers. Our management knows how important it is. They will definitely do it,” he said. The outcomes extend beyond daily classes. Several graduates have gone on to study computer applications at the university level, with some now employed in IT-related jobs. In addition, Fair Trade Premium funds have supported students through higher education scholarships, enabling them to continue their studies after secondary school. Teachers report greater confidence in delivering technology-enhanced lessons, and students are gaining skills relevant for their futures. As Shanmugan noted, “It is a good boost for our teachers and school. We can see a positive impact.” By investing in digital literacy, the community has built a foundation for future success. The program has not only enhanced classroom learning but has also opened doors to higher education and employment, creating a lasting positive impact for students and their families.
