Eyeglasses for Everyday Needs

Garment and home goods workers at PT Tainan Enterprises Indonesia in Jakarta Raya identified eye health as a priority affecting their daily well-being. Because many workers are middle-aged or older, they frequently faced challenges maintaining focus during their routine tasks. Through a needs assessment led by the Fair Trade Committee, the workforce identified eye health as a top concern. They highlighted the importance of access to proper vision care, including accurate prescriptions and information to support long-term eye health. In response, the Fair Trade Committee allocated $9,500 USD of Community Development Funds to launch a comprehensive Employee Eyeglasses Program. This initiative delivered professional eye examinations, custom prescription glasses, and education on eye care practices. Dedicated ophthalmologists conducted vision screenings to guarantee each person received the exact support they needed. Ultimately, the program was structured to reach over 820 workers, with particular attention to those requiring vision support. This targeted initiative provided staff with corrective eyewear and the knowledge to protect their eyesight over time. With access to appropriate glasses, workers are able to carry out daily tasks with greater comfort and reduced eye strain. Furthermore, the program safeguards long-term eye health by preventing complications linked to unmanaged vision issues. This investment highlights how a worker-led approach directly addresses shared health needs, emphasizing access to essential care that truly elevates their overall quality of life.
