A Fair Trade Investment in Dental Health

For over eight years, Grupo Alta, a Fair Trade Certified producer of organic tomatoes, grapes, and cucumbers in Sonora, Mexico, has championed both sustainable agriculture and worker well-being. Recently, when agricultural workers identified a critical gap in affordable, specialized dental care, Grupo Alta Fair Trade Committee took immediate action to find a solution. In 2025, the General Assembly of workers approved a targeted health project to meet this exact need. Listening closely to their community, they allocated $11,700 USD of Community Development Funds to support complex oral health services, including maxillofacial care, pediatric dentistry, and endodontics. By structuring the project to cover 75 percent of total treatment costs, the initiative made these vital services significantly more accessible for workers and their direct family members. Ultimately, the project reached 300 beneficiaries, providing specialized care that is normally financially out of reach. By lowering out-of-pocket expenses, this worker-directed investment empowers families to seek timely treatment, maintain consistent oral health, and experience meaningful financial relief at home.
